UPDATE: Tom has tweeted again about the Twilight rumors, and has linked to this article, saying, “May join Rob? Hmmm.”
Additionally, many Twilight news sites have also reported getting inundated with e-mails about Tom Felton’s possible role in Twilight. Twilight Lexicon, one of the biggest Twilight news sites, had an article about Tom today, saying, “We’ve had a ton of Tweets and emails, not to mention a request to advertise an online petition, concerning actor Tom Felton.”
More coverage of Tom in Twilight:
- Harry Potter Web site Oclumencia says (according to one translation), “The actor was probably selected for the role, only it has not yet been disclosed by the media.”
- His Golden Eyes, says, “I have to say, this is by far my favorite choice for Riley.”
- Twilighters Anonymous says, “I will throw this out there though – I love Tom Felton for Riley. Surely, if they can bring Jamie so far to play Caius, they can do the same for Tom?”
- Twilight Online, Netherlands, says, “I’m totally for Tom as Riley!”
- Live Love Twilight says, “I think he would be a good fit (I’m all for some more HP cast members in Twilight haha).”
- Fans on Yahoo Answers say, “Oh oh oh! He would be perfect! He is exactly how Riley should look and I think he is great actor! He should definitely be Riley!”
- Tweetlebrity.com says, “There is a movement to get Tom Felton cast as Riley in Eclipse.”

In Eclipse, actress Rachelle Lefèvre will reprise her role as Victoria
According to E! Online, a casting call went out yesterday for three characters in “Eclipse,” the third installment of the Twilight franchise to be filmed in June 2010. Included in the group was the vampire Riley, who is described in the notice as a “handsome, blond, clean-cut college boy who falls victim to Victoria.” The notice says he should be in his early to mid 20s and the character “plays an integral role in Victoria’s attempt to murder Bella Swan.”
Immediately Tom Felton was singled out – by fans and by some in the movie industry – as a possible actor for this role, due to his famous blond hair and smolderingly dark portrayal of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series. Tom was spotlighted previously as a potential candidate for another Twilight role, that of young vampire Alec, by People magazine:
“Possessing the ability to numb a victim’s senses, quiet but deadly Alec could be well-played by Tom Felton, who is known as Harry Potter’s foe Draco Malfoy.” – People Magazine
Within hours of this new casting announcement, a quick search of the internet revealed chatter on Yahoo Answers, Twilight news sites, message boards, Twitter and blogs about Tom’s possible involvement in the Twilight franchise. One user even started a petition! Additionally, both Feltbeats.com and Tom Felton himself received numerous e-mails and tweets asking whether Tom had indeed been cast in this role.
If Tom were to play the part of Riley, he would become the second Harry Potter star to cross over to the Twilight franchise, following Robert Pattinson, the actor who plays both Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and Edward Cullen in Twilight.
“I’ll be ready when they want me!” Tom responded late last night when Feltbeats.com asked for his response to these rumors. “Really, I’m only joking. I’m not really sure at this point; but you will be the first to know if I find out anything!”
At one point in the day, Tom actually posted a message on Twitter to address the issue, saying, “I keep getting asked if I’m being cast as Riley in Twilight! I’ll let you all know if so!!!”
A vast majority of Tom Felton fans reacted positively to the news that Tom could be in the running for a vampire role in Twilight. Twitter user MegTao told Feltbeats.com that she thought Tom would do the part justice. “I mean, come on, it’s Tom Felton. He fits the description of the character incredibly well.”
MegTao also thought Tom would catch on to the Riley role easily due to his similarities with Draco Malfoy. “Draco is normally calm and calculating, as is Riley,” she said. “But they both have that desperate edge to them. And, both characters really want (and need) to please their Masters.”
Pepper, another Felton fan from New York, agreed with MegTao. “Tom would be absolutely perfect,” Pepper said. “He has such a sweet and innocent nature about him, and yet he has a skill at playing (very well) a dark and complex character.”
Pepper also commented on the parallelism between the character arcs of Riley and Draco. “In the end, before Riley’s execution, he is given a chance at redemption, and is torn between his loyalties and his sense of compassion. It’s the same with Draco, who upon successfully disarming Dumbledore in the end of Half-Blood Prince, is given the chance a liberation by Dumbledore himself.
“Draco was torn, much like Riley, but ultimately both held true to their Masters’ bid, to Riley’s demise and Draco’s flight.”
POTTER V. TWILIGHT
Some Harry Potter fans expressed concern about sharing one of their favorite Potter actors with the Twilight fandom, but Twitter user NoemiR21 from Oregon doesn’t see this as a problem. “The rivalry between Harry Potter and Twilight? It’s all crap! I love both!
“Some fans might not want the two to clash, but it would be awesome to see Tom in a Twilight film. Tom would be amazing as Riley – he looks just like how I pictured Riley to look, based on the description Stephanie Meyer gives us in the book.”
SweetDarkDreams, a fan from the Caribbean, claims to love each franchise equally. “I really don’t understand the ‘war.’ Both series came from different women authors with brilliant minds and they both did it for fun. I don’t care which came first.”
TOM AND ROB: TOGETHER AGAIN?
As for Tom Felton, he said he would be thrilled to be able to work with Rob Pattinson again. “When Rob played Cedric Diggory I don’t think we got to spent too much time getting to know each other,” he said. “There were so many of us on set and it was such a big group, you didn’t always get to know someone one on one.”
But Tom does remember Pattinson being a real ladies’ man. “I remember the scene [in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire] when we were all dancing in the Great Hall – he had all the girls on set giggling and going after him even then!”
Pepper is also looking forward to seeing Tom and Rob together again on the big screen, particularly in Eclipse’s final fight scene, where Edward Cullen finally confronts Riley. “Everything leads up to this climactic scene that – if done right – will be epic and inarguably awesome,” she said. “Tom and Rob in a scene together might cause a mass-fan-girl-head-explosion, however!”
For now, we can just wait and see. Tom promised he’d let Feltbeats.com know more details as soon as he had some. But until then, he may have some studying up to do. “To be honest,” he said, “I haven’t seen the first movie yet! But my girlfriend has been bugging me to watch it with her, so perhaps it is time!”
