Confirmed: Tom Felton to star in historical mini-series based on bestseller Labyrinth

Tom Felton has confirmed with us that he has signed on to play Raymond-Roger de Trencavel, the Viscout of Carcassonne, in a four-hour TV adaptation of Kate Mosse’s bestselling novel, “Labyrinth.”

Earlier today we saw that WorldScreen.com broke the news about Tom’s new role in an interview with the managing director of Tandem Communications. Thanks to Snitchseeker.com for the tip.

After the news was confirmed by the production company, it seems Tom was also willing to confirm with us!

In the movie, Tom will play Raymond-Roger de Trencavel, who tried to protect his subjects from the crusaders in 12th century France. Tom’s character is the Viscount of Carcassonne, which was a stronghold of the outlawed Cathar Christians who were declared heretical by the Catholic Church made a military target.

Also in the cast are John Hurt, Sebastian Stan, Janet Suzman, Jessica Brown-Findlay, Vanessa Kirby, Katie McGrath, Emun Elliott and Claudia Gerini.

From WorldScreen.com:

Felton will play Raymond-Roger de Trencavel, the Viscount of Carcassonne, who died in 1209 trying to protect his Cathar citizens from genocide. Tony Curran (The Pillars of the Earth, X-Men: First Class, The Adventures of Tintin) has also signed on. The miniseries adaptation of the 2006 international bestseller began principal photography on October 10 in Carcasonne in the Aude/Cathar Country in the south of France. Labyrinth is a treaty co-production between Germany and South Africa and is a Tandem Communications/Film Afrika co-production in association with Ridley Scott and Tony Scott’s Scott Free Films.

“Joining our already assembled brilliant cast, are the spectacular Tom Felton and Tony Curran,” said Tim Halkin, the managing director of Tandem Communications and an executive producer. “I’m particularly pleased to have found an extraordinarily talented young actor who is the same age as that of the historical figure of Viscount Trencavel. Trencavel was an amazing young man, wise beyond his years and I’m sure that Tom Felton will do his memory and his legacy justice.”

“Tony Curran and Tom Felton are some of the finest actors in the U.K. today,” added Liza Marshall, the head of Scott Free London and an executive producer. “They have broken out and made names for themselves internationally and we are proud to count them amongst our wonderful cast.”

More about the novel, according to Wikipedia:

Labyrinth is an archaeological mystery English-language novel written by Kate Mosse set both in the Middle Ages and present-day France. It was published in 2005.

It divides into two main storylines that follow two protagonists, Alaïs (from the year 1209) and Alice (in the year 2005). The two stories occur in a shared geography and intertwine. The novel relies heavily on historical events such as the massacre at Béziers and the Crusade against the Cathars in Occitania, now the South of France, from around 1200. Ultimately the story becomes a quest for the Holy Grail.

The film has already begun shooting in southern France.

Tom Felton believes in magic!

During the Teen Choice Awards, Tom Felton and Matt Lewis were given awareness wristbands from a charity called “Believe in Magic.”

This charity was founded by Meg, who was herself sick as a child. Now, her charity works to bring a little magic to other children who are sick in the hospital – such as buying them gifts or throwing them magical parties.

But, since Tom got the wristband several days ago, he has yet to take it off! You can see him wearing it during the Warner Bros webchat, and in all of the pictures during RingCon, as well.

So, please try to bring a little awareness to this magical children’s charity. You can buy a wristband just like Tom’s, buy a raffle ticket for the Believe in Magic raffle, or even help promote the charity by retweeting this:

Photos and videos of Tom Felton on second day of RingCon

Thanks to Estrella89San, we have some new photos of Tom Felton on the second day of RingCon in Germany. He gave a Q&A session as well as an autograph session.

Thanks again lovely!

Unfortunately, the Q&A session was not allowed to be filmed, but we hope to have at least some questions written up (and likely some more illegal YouTube videos) in a day or so.

Speaking of YouTube videos, there are a few so far from RingCon.

This one from some overly-excited Italian girls (but who could blame them!). It is a little shaky, but adorable and fun to watch.

And, here is Tom leaving the signing session at RingCon:
