Transcript

Thanks again to FA member Becka for this transcript. Becka is British so she can translate things into proper English for us Americans.

Tom Felton: Hello Brian.

Brian Dowling: How are you?

TF: I’m very well, thank you for having me.

BD: Is it true that you originally auditioned for the role of Harry in the Harry Potter movies?

TF: Yes, I mean…

BD: That is true?

TF: It is true, it is true. This is going back nine years now or something, back when we were just children so to speak. So yeah, we did a few for Harry and then a few for Ron as well.

BD: Oh really?

TF: Yeah. (laughs) They dyed my hair ginger and brown.

BD: You liar, did they?

TF: I’m no liar, I got, I got a fair uh, I got a fair digging at school for that.

BD: What’s it like being ginger?

TF: (Laughs) Ginger for a day! It was an experience.

BD: Ginger for a day.

TF: It was an experience, I recommend it to any one.

BD: What about being brunette, what about being brunette for a day?

TF: It’s not so bad, not so bad.

BD: Is being blond better?

TF: I dunno, I’m willing to say blonds have more fun but uh…

BD: Do they?

TF: I’ve been blond for the last seven years, so it’s hard to say, really.

BD: And, tell us about “The Half Blood Prince” movie, what can we expect?

TF: A lot, a lot, I mean obviously I’m restricted, I haven’t seen much, I limit myself to how much I actually watch whilst we’re shooting it. It was an seven month shoot and I was there throughout, and for what I’ve seen and done, it’s gunna be a… it’s gunna be an epic film.

BD: Now you’re also taking part in Jack Osbourne’s show, Adrenaline Junkie, this Wednesday.

TF: Yes, yes.

BD: Now I’ve actually seen the show, that’s how important I am.

TF: I’m very excited.

BD: You’ve not seen it yet.

TF: I’ve not seen any of it, no.

BD: Now can I say, you’re on up with Wendi Peters from Corrie and Gemma Atkinson.

TF: Correct.

BD: Did you enjoy it, ’cause you do some pretty… weird, crazy stuff.

TF: I know, yeah. Truth be told, I’m not an adrenaline junkie by birth right, so this was uh, a totally new experience for me so, I’m kinda glad that I pushed myself to do what I did, ’cause there’s no other way I would have ever done it otherwise.

BD: What I find quite weird, obviously having watched you in the movies, was you swearing.

TF: Uh yeah, yeah.

BD: You swearing, I was like “Oh, you shouldn’t say that!”

TF: Ohh!

BD: “Oh, he’s gunna get done for that!” And you did swear quite a lot!

TF: Do I really? Oh God! My mum’s already warned me! My gramps is gunna be watching, he’s gunna be holding his head!

The Ultimate Fan Interview (Part Three): Feltbeats.com interviews Tom Felton

Tom Felton has been extremely busy recently – from SoccerAid and Celebrity Adrenaline Junkie, to “Half-Blood Prince” and “The Disappeared.” He’s really kept us admins at Feltbeats.com on our toes trying to cover his many projects! So, to help us out, Tom agreed to give us a ring and discuss what he’s been up to and to answer a few questions for us.

This interview is the third part in a series of four:

Our fourth, and last, part of the interview will be posted Monday, November 10, to promote Tom’s appearance on “Jack Osbourne: Celebrity Adrenaline Junkie” which airs on ITV2 Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 9 pm GMT (3 PM US-Central).

It is an amazing interview, and there is a slight, remote, tiny, distant, sliver of a chance you might be able to see a picture of the highest-ranked stunt in our “Celebrity Adrenaline Junkie” poll.

Additionally, Feltbeats.com will be hosting another online viewing party during Tom’s “Celebrity Adrenaline Junkie!” episode! We will all meet in the FeltChat room and, barring technical difficulties, will attempt to watch the show live via screen sharing.

  • “Celebrity Adrenaline Junkie” Viewing Party: Wednesday, Nov. 12, 9 PM GMT (3 PM US-Central).

A FEW NOTES: Because Feltbeats.com also had a question or two for her (about YouTube accounts and what she did for a living, etc.), Tom asked his girlfriend Jade, the assistant to the stunt coordinator on Harry Potter films (in addition to many other films in the industry), to be on speakerphone with him as well. This week you may hear her laughing in some of the audio. 😉

And, several times throughout the interview Tom refers to America or asks me about the States because that’s where I live. 🙂

Feltbeats.com: Regarding the upcoming Harry Potter movie, Half-Blood Prince, we Felton Fans are extremely excited to finally see a movie with a more in-depth, rounded-out Draco. Were you happy to finally be able to better flesh out this character?

Tom: Yeah, sure. When David Yates dragged me [aside] at the beginning of it and said, “I have full faith in you,” yadda yadda, and I hope that you’re going to embrace the role and so forth. And I was fairly terrified. We did a read-through with Michael Gambon, and I was petrified at the thought of the final scene.

But after that, I guess I sort of learned a lot on the set, and David Yates was really my motivation. He was very, very, complimentary of everything he saw and very good with direction. He knew exactly what to say to get the results he wanted. And what the producers saw, they were very, very happy as well. And that sort of spurred me on even further. And, it was great fun. I really, really enjoyed it more than any other film, without a doubt. Sort of, embracing the role, if you will, and making the most of it.

Feltbeats.com: Was it a big relief to show a different side of Draco?

Tom: It was great; it was probably the most exciting thing about playing the character this year. Obviously, he was a little bit two-dimensional in previous films. He was just a rather spiteful git for the sake of it; whereas in this film you get to see why he’s a bit of a git because of his father and his upbringing and so forth. You get to see both sides, really, of his extremes – the side where obviously his father is away and he’s trying to take on the male role and so forth.

But equally, the pressure will get too much for him, and you’ll see a much weaker side of him. So yeah, it was great playing a bit more versatile character, rather than just two-dimensional.

Feltbeats.com: I have heard that there is a scene in “Half-Blood Prince” in which Draco actually cries?

Tom: Yeah, in the bathroom. When he gets a rather guilty stare from our young Potter friend and he can’t handle it anymore. I’m not sure how much I can say here, but yeah, he makes his way to the bathroom and things get a bit too much for the young man.

AUDIO: Tom discusses the crying scene in “Half Blood Prince.”
[audio:crying.mp3]

Feltbeats.com: In terms of “The Deathly Hallows,” are there any particular scenes – well, really, aren’t there only two or three Draco scenes?

Tom: There are two scenes, really, aren’t there? There’s one in the Malfoy Manor and one in the Room of Requirement.

Feltbeats.com: Yeah, those are the big ones, and he’s also in the opening scene.

Tom: Yeah, he’s in the last scene as well.

Feltbeats.com: Yes, standing around watching the fight and hiding from everyone.

Tom: (Laughs) That’s right. Yeah, yeah. He’s about, he’s about.

Feltbeats.com: Which of the scenes are you most excited about? And, as you were reading the book, how did it feel to have Draco’s wand so prominently featured in the plot leading to Voldemort’s demise?

Tom: It was obviously great fun reading it. And, obviously, you try not to, but whenever you see your name in print your heart starts racing and you think, “Here you go. What’s going to happen here?” So yeah, I’m really looking forward to seeing my house, you know, and sort of being in the house with Jason [Issacs] and all the other Death Eaters that I worked with in this film, because they were all a great laugh. So that will be fun, no doubt.

And obviously, the big fight at the end, where I lose one of my campadres to the fire, or summat like that. That will be great fun, because it will be like a full-on battle scene which has been long overdue.

AUDIO: Tom talks about his favorite parts of “The Dealthy Hallows.”
[audio:dh1.mp3]

Feltbeats.com: Yeah, a lot of fans are looking forward to the fire scene, so I hope they don’t cut it.

Tom: I can’t wait. I can’t wait. I hope it will be a long shoot so we can get some time to enjoy it.

Feltbeats.com: And they can’t cut it because it is a Horcrux scene, right?

Tom: That’s right! Yeah. Certainly there will be no cutting it. Yeah. And actually, there will be some rather daring stunts for the young man.

Feltbeats.com: If only we had a good stunt coordinator to help with that…

Tom: (Laughs) Now I know you’re being sarcastic!

Feltbeats.com: Just a little bit!

Tom: You nearly had me there. (Laughs) I was about to say, “You’re joking! You’ll never guess what Jade does for a living!”

Feltbeats.com: I asked her about it before!

Tom: Yeah, I guessed. (Laughs) You are very crafty! You two are going to gang up against me here, I can see it…

Feltbeats.com: No question!

Tom: (Laughs)

AUDIO: Tom says I’m very crafty. (Yes, that’s Jade laughing in the background. You can tell because she has a totally cute laugh, whereas mine is rather annoying! *sigh*)
[audio:sarcastic.mp3]

Feltbeats.com would like to thank Tom Felton for taking time (and it was a long while, actually!) to talk to us. We are eternally grateful, appreciative, pleased, and so forth. Yadda yadda, as Tom would say.

COMING NEXT WEEK: We discuss explicit language, his greatest fear, and his version of extreme sports. Also, Tom speculates as to how Draco would react if Jack Osbourne told him to jump off a cliff.

The Ultimate Fan Interview (Part Two): Feltbeats.com interviews Tom Felton

Tom Felton has been extremely busy recently – from SoccerAid and Celebrity Adrenaline Junkie, to “Half-Blood Prince” and “The Disappeared.” He’s really kept us admins at Feltbeats.com on our toes trying to cover his many projects! So, to help us out, Tom agreed to give us a ring and discuss what he’s been up to and to answer a few questions for us.

This interview is the second part in a series of four, and we’ll post parts each Monday leading up to Tom’s appearance on “Jack Osbourne: Celebrity Adrenaline Junkie” on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Feltbeats.com: We’re very excited about the prospects of the planned “Emma of Lulworth Cove” movie. Tell us what you think of it!

Tom: It’s very interesting. I was very flattered when Ray Stokes approached me and said, “Would you be interested?” It’s still obviously a little bit in the air, but I really hope that the funding goes through, and, if it does, I’ll be very excited about taking on that role. I look forward to filming in Dorset as well, because it would be a beautiful place to do it.

Feltbeats.com: How close is Dorset to you?

Tom: It’s a stone’s throw in American terms, but, maybe a couple of hours’ away drive? I’ve been to Lulworth Cove as a child, apparently, so my Mum tells me.

Feltbeats.com: We at Feltbeats.com are definitely hoping that soon we’ll be able to announce the green light on this movie!

Tom: I check your site nearly daily, and I’m sure that’s how I’m going to find out! It will be through you, I’m sure. But yeah, I really hope that the project goes through, obviously; it’s a very exciting project.

Feltbeats.com: This will be your first on-screen kiss; are you terribly nervous?

Tom: (Laughs) Ummmm, it isn’t something I’ve given too much thought, to be fair. I would think it would be slightly awkward; as I said, I’ve never done it before. So, I couldn’t comment on it, really.

Feltbeats.com: Your other new movie, “The Disappeared,” is currently being shown around the world in film festivals and various other screenings, and it is doing really well. It recently won a Best Feature Film award. And your acting is getting great reviews, so congratulations on that. Can you tell me a little bit about the film and what it was like playing a character who was so much more subtle and probably more genuine than Draco Malfoy?

Tom: Yeah, it was very different filming “The Disappeared.” We shot the whole thing in twenty-six days, and my actual part only required six days filming. So it was great working as fast as we did, which was a big contrast to filming on Harry Potter.

It was a very small crew, so we got to know each other very well and very quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Johnny [Kevorkian]; he was great, and really enthusiastic. Harry [Treadaway] was also great to work with; I learned a lot from him, and I think he is very talented actor.

The genre of the film is different to what everyone is used to; its a very dark and British film. Playing Simon was strange. It was slightly weird to be playing someone who was so normal and real. In many respects, it was good to be able to play a character that wasn’t so contrasting to myself; it helps to be able to relate to the character you play.

NOTE: I was hoping to include at least two audio clips, but most of the audio from this week wasn’t usable, so I’m including an audio snippet from last week’s interview (and I’ll include the question and written answer in case you can’t understand the audio). Hope you don’t mind!

Feltbeats.com: We’d love to know a little bit more about Feltbeats! Does anyone help you with it?

Tom: Not really, no. My team consists of me and Jade. All the songs – they’re not even really finished songs, if you will, they’re just sort of ideas.

When the YouTube videos sort of started taking off, I used to look at every positive comment and felt really touched that A) all these people had listened to it but B) most of the comments sounded genuine, and there weren’t really that many negatives. So that sort of spurred me to write a few more and to put them on and make them available in any way I knew – through the web site, and through iTunes.

COMING NEXT WEEK: We discuss some movie Tom was in called “Harry Potter.” You’ve probably never heard of it, but it should be interesting nonetheless.
