GHOSTS OF THE PACIFIC

In one of the most harrowing true stories of WWII, three US Navy fliers crash land their torpedo bomber in the South Pacific. With only a 4×8 foot life raft to carry them, and no food, water or supplies, the trio must rely on each other to survive starvation, storms, and shark attacks – and somehow steer their little raft to safety.

SYNOPSIS

About the Film

It’s January 16, 1942. Veteran Navy pilot Harold Dixon, and his young crew — radioman Gene Aldrich, and bombardier Tony Pastula — take off from the deck of aircraft carrier USS Enterprise to search for Japanese submarines in the glistening waters of the South Pacific. The three men are virtual strangers, assigned to spend an afternoon together in a single-engine torpedo bomber. They should be back on the ship in time for dinner.

But instead of dinner, evening instead finds the men adrift on a dark ocean in a tiny rubber raft, forced to ditch their plane after they somehow lost their carrier…then their remaining fuel…then the setting sun. Most significantly, the plane itself sank to the ocean floor, carrying with it nearly all of their emergency supplies.

No first aid kit, no signaling device, no compass, no food, no water.

Thus begins GHOSTS OF THE PACIFIC, the incredible account of a 34-day odyssey that has become a Navy legend. Dixon, Aldrich, and Pastula cast adrift on the high seas, assaulted by sharks and storms, burning in the relentless sun, starving to death.

Faced with these long odds — when it would be easier to simply roll into the dark water and embrace death’s relief — the three men challenge the fates to set them free by trying to sail their little craft a thousand miles to safety.

ComingSoon.net reported:

Garret Dillahunt (“Raising Hope”), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), and Jake Abel (The Host) are set to star in Ghosts of the Pacific, the true story of three WWII Navy flyers cast adrift on the South Pacific in 1942. The feature will be produced by The American Film Company, which specializes in making movies based on true stories from America’s past.

Producer and American Film Co. president Brian Falk will be making his directorial debut recounting the incredible journey of pilot Harold Dixon (Dillahunt), bombardier Tony Pastula (Felton), and radioman Gene Aldrich (Abel) – virtual strangers assigned to a scouting mission on January 16, 1942. When they are forced to ditch their plane, the men are left with no food, water, or supplies; only a 4×8-foot yellow life raft to keep them afloat on a dangerous ocean.

Written by Mark David Keegan and Falk, the film is being produced by Falk and Mark Moran (Struck by Lightning, Beautiful Boy). Kurt Graver will co-produce. The American Film Company founder and CEO Joe Ricketts is the Executive Producer.

“I’ve always been attracted to true stories that showcase ordinary people in extraordinary situations,” said Ricketts. “The men in ‘Ghosts of the Pacific’ faced seemingly insurmountable odds and yet they never gave up. They were America’s first heroes of the Pacific war.”

Ghosts of the Pacific is scheduled to commence principal photography April 15 at Baja Studios in Rosarito, Mexico. The facility houses the largest outdoor water tank in the world, built for James Cameron’s Titanic.
