New Interview by Sunday Express – Tom Felton : “My biggest regret is …”

Sunday Express has published a new interview with Tom.

Simon Button had 25 interesting questions for him:

Not a lot of people know this but I’m very good at… yo-yoing and diabolo – you know, that thing with two sticks and a piece of string. I’m pretty handy at both of those.

My best friend is… my girlfriend Jade. Having someone who truly understands you, where you don’t have to sugar-coat things and where most conversations can be held with just a look, is rare.

My nickname is… Feltz or F-Beats. The former is self-explanatory and the latter goes back to my early hip-hop-loving days, when I was 12 years old and thought I was going to be the next Eminem.

The bravest thing I’ve ever done is… a bungee jump, but I’m glad I did – it was exciting and very liberating.

My favourite TV show is… Breaking Bad, or it was until everyone else started to like it. Recently, I’ve been really enjoying Peaky Blinders. I’m in love with that whole era and the soundtrack is awesome too – I have those songs on repeat in my car.

My perfect evening is… a nice dinner, glass of wine and a film. Jade and I travel quite a lot and we’re not used to having our own kitchen, so it’s usually a case of scouring online delivery menus.

I’d like to say sorry to… my mum for not answering the phone yesterday, but I’m going to call her back.

My first kiss was… on a bouncy castle when I was 11. I claimed I was doing some sort of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation when actually it was just a ploy – but it worked and it was the start of a three-week relationship.

My biggest regret is… not answering the phone to my mum yesterday, but I’m the worst multitasker ever and I was driving at the time.

The one thing I’d change about myself is… my inability to do my own hair or dress myself even remotely stylishly.

The best thing my parents taught me was… manners. My mum instilled good manners in me early on – minding your Ps and Qs, opening doors for ladies and that sort of stuff – and it’s something that’s stuck with me. It’s a quintessential British trait and it shouldn’t be watered down, although my missus may tell you I’m not as good with it as I think I am.

The last time I cried was… when we lost our dog Timber a few months ago. She was only seven and I had a proper wail about that. She was chasing rabbits one minute with a clean bill of health, then she was diagnosed with cancer. It was a rapid descent and we’re very sad to lose her, but she had a great life.

The first record I ever bought was… Green Day’s Dookie album, although I can’t remember if I bought it or stole it from my brother. It’s not good for my image but

I like… wearing pyjamas outdoors. I’ve got these pyjama bottoms that I love. They’re red and chequered, which means I get some funny looks if I pop to the shops in them, but they’re so comfortable.

My greatest weakness is… ice cream or crêpes. I also have a terrible tendency when I’m in New York to frequent those hot-dog stands. Leave me there for half an hour and I could easily eat 10 of them.

If I could pass any law I would… exempt myself from parking fines. I don’t know if it’s because the signs are too complicated or I just have a horrendous inability to understand parking laws, but I have a terrible habit of picking up tickets.

I drive… a Mercedes CLA, which I adore. I’m obsessed with the gadgets inside. It’s got all the modern tech and it feeds my desire to be a bit of a boy because it sounds like a tiger is growling underneath the bonnet.

The shop I can’t walk past is… anywhere they sell musical instruments, the more rare and exotic the better. I end up going in for an hour and learning how to play some sort of Tibetan kazoo. If I had my way, I’d fill the house with such things, but I’ve been banned from doing that.

The most expensive thing I’ve ever splashed out on is… a Ford Focus for my mum six years ago. She’s still driving it, bless her heart.

My perfect Sunday is… a roast dinner at my mum’s, which I’m sure most sons would say. It’s my ultimate comfort food.

My favourite place in Britain is… the village of Ockley in Surrey. It’s got three pubs, a butcher’s shop and a cricket pitch – so that’s all the essentials covered.

My last holiday was… when we spent a few days last January in Big Sur on the California coast. It’s this beautiful spot with a fantastic forest, but it’s also right on the ocean and it’s pretty spectacular.

I’m currently reading… a lot of scripts, which is good, and the odd magazine. And I recently read The Dude and the Zen Master by Jeff Bridges, which is brilliantly written and very witty.

The best day of my life was… buying my dog Timber. My mum stressed to me that getting a dog was a bigger responsibility than I was capable of taking on, but with hindsight it proved I was able to make that commitment.

If I had half an hour left on Earth… I’d get everyone down the local pub if that was possible, sneak a quick pint in, have a game of darts and a little singsong then call it a day.

Harry Potter’s Draco Malfoy relishes being the bad guy – again

It is true you’re making a BBC documentary about super-fans and stalkers?

Yes. It’s something I’ve never had an opportunity to do – spend time with these kinds of people. It’s a fascinating thing. I’m so conditioned to it now it all seems natural. I remember once, in Japan, I wasn’t even sure if they’d heard of Harry Potter, but there were hundreds of very excited young and old women with banners saying “Welcome Draco”. It makes you feel like one of the Beatles.

What sort of reaction do you normally get from the public?

I generally get a warm reaction. I have been booed and hissed a bit, and younger kids did tend to be petrified, but most of them have grown up now: I get requests to say mean things to people and leave nasty phone messages.

Are you still in touch with the other Potter actors?

I see Rupert [Grint, who payed Ron Weasley] in New York. We had a nice little reunion dinner with Dan [Radcliffe – Harry Potter] as well. We all stay in touch. It’s odd when we see each other now. Last time we had beards and shaggy haircuts. The years are showing!

Do you thing JK Rowling will ever bow to the pressure and write more books?

If she does, I just hope she does it before I’m too old! But the fan base isn’t going anywhere, the popularity is gaining, even. More and more people recognise me in the street.

You’re playing a baddie again, tech genius Erich Blunt, in Murder in the First. Do you ever worry about being typecast?

I don’t worry at all. When I signed up to do the pilot, I had no idea what was going to happen. So I had to trust that we weren’t going to be drastically surprised and I wasn’t sure how far along the spectrum of evil my guy was going to be. But I enjoy sinister characters; they’re very different to how I am in reality. I don’t pick these roles, I just get given them.

What was it like putting on the American accent?

I’ve done it a couple of times and it used to be a conscious effort. It’s kind of progressed, having lived here for so long, and it’s just natural now. My family do take the mickey.

What can’t you miss on TV?

Peaky Blinders. I love that whole era. I think the acting is fantastic, and it’s a really exciting insight into English history.

What was the last thing you turned down?

Panto. They wanted me to be some evil genie or something. That and I’m a Celebrity, and I’ve had requests to do Dancing on Ice. It would take an eight figure sum to get me to do that. No, that’s my ego talking. It’s kind of putting your neck on the line, and I’m not brave enough.

Murder in the First starts at 10pm on Friday on Fox

QUICKFIRE Q&A

1. Downtown Abbey or Peaky Blinders?

Peaky Blinders. Although I am a Downtown fan as well.

2. EastEnders or Corrie?

3. Strictly or X Factor? Neither!

4. Rugby or Football?

5. Pointless or University Challenge?

University Challenge – it’s a staple of my childhood.

Feltbeats: What’s next on your schedule?

Tom: Heading off to work on a new feature film with Joseph Fiennes called “Clavius” for the next few months which I’m very excited about!

Feltbeats: Many HP stars play an instument or sing, would he ever like to record a song as an ensemble for the fans?

Tom: I’ve tried several times to start a pop group with Daniel and Rupert with little success. Never say never.

Feltbeats: What do you think of the success of Belle? The Reviews are fantastic!

Tom: I was so happy it got the response it did. It has such a relevant message today and I’m thrilled Amma is getting the credit she deserves, I’d jump at the chance to work with her again.

Feltbeats: You recently attended the preview of Universal Orlando. What did you think of Diagon Alley?

Tom: Unbelievable. They really have raised the bar.

Feltbeats: We would most likely find Draco Malfoy down in Knockturn Alley. Where would Tom Felton hang out?

Tom: Whichever place was dog friendly. The three broomsticks, they do great food…!

Feltbeats: If you were jonesing for a Harry Potter fix, where would you rather be? Studio tour or Wizarding World of Harry Potter?

Tom: Both work differently. The studio tour is home and the park is pure escapism.

As always, it would not be a Feltbeats interview without a few silly questions. Stay tuned for Part 3 of our Exclusive interview with Tom Felton on Monday!
