Tom Felton: from “New Orleans” over “New Awwwlins” to “N’awlins”

Today nola.com published an article about Tom and his time in New Orleans.

For the next three weeks, “Harry Potter” actor Tom Felton — who has been in New Orleans since early October to shoot the indie golfing drama “From the Rough” — will be living and breathing “Potter” publicity ahead of the Nov. 19 release of the eagerly anticipated seventh film in the popular wizarding series.

In the meantime, though, the actor — who plays dark-side dabbler Draco Malfoy in the “Potter” films — has been determined to squeeze in as much New Orleans as possible, going so far as to rearrange his schedule to catch English rockers Muse at this weekend’s Voodoo Music Fest before he jets off to Los Angeles.

It was to be the capper to a visit that has seen first-time visitor Felton and his “From the Rough” co-stars gleefully soaking up the city’s nightlife and absorbing as much of the local vibe as possible.

“In London, New York and such, they have live music,” said Felton, a self-described music fan, “but not like here, where all of a sudden on the corner of a street someone will start playing — (there are) bands everywhere. Almost everywhere you go, you can hear a brass band within earshot.”

The positive local experience (“It’s probably the happiest I’ve been working on a film set,” Felton said) has been helped by the band-of-brothers-type bond he has formed with his co-stars, including Paul Hodge (“Rendition,” “The Road”), Robert Bailey Jr. (“Memphis Beat,” “The Happening”), Justin Chon (the “Twilight” movies) and Ben Youcef (“Munich,” “Rendition”). Their relationships, which Hodge said started on their first day shooting together (at Tad Gormley Stadium), lends the “From the Rough” set a collegial atmosphere, filled with chops-busting, wisecracking and true bromance.

“Ask him some questions about magic,” Bailey jokingly advised a visiting journalist preparing to interview Felton. “He loooves that.”

“Has he told you the score of the Battle of the Ashes?” Hodge asked, referencing the friendly golfing competition in which he’s engaged Felton at courses around the metro area.

(Hodge leads, 4-1.)

Along the way there have been shared trips to Frenchmen Street, to Bourbon Street, to the Maple Leaf Bar. And there have been enough Saints games to persuade Hodge — a newly minted member of the Who Dat Nation — to sport a black-and-gold “Believe’ wristband on the set Wednesday night.

“If there’s one thing I’m going to take away from this city — aside from 10 extra pounds and a liver transplant — I’m wearing the ‘Believe’ bracelet,” the Australian said.

Although this was the first visit to New Orleans for most of the cast, the prevailing sentiment was that it won’t be their last.

“I came in saying, ‘I’m going to New Orleans,’ ” Felton said. “Then I learned to say, ‘I’m going to New Awwwlins.’ Now I’m just saying ‘N’awlins’: ‘Aw, man, I’m going down to N’awlins.’ I love it down here. I’ll be back. I’ll be back to New Orleans.”

“From the Rough,” based on real events, stars Taraji P. Henson as the newly appointed coach of the men’s golf team at a historically black Tennessee college. With a student body short on competitive golfers, she recruits foreign golfers — white foreign golfers — to field a competitive team.

Directed by Pierre Bagley and co-produced by Jason Sciavicco of the New Orleans-based Horizon Entertainment, the movie is scheduled to wrap on Friday, with an eye toward a 2011 release.

RingCon 2010 without Tom Felton, but with the Phelps twins and feltbeats.com stickers

As you all know, Tom couldn’t make it to Ring*Con in Bonn, Germany due to shooting “From the Rough” in New Orleans, Louisiana. Still I was there to represent feltbeats.com and it was great.

To promote our website we created stickers which were in the welcome bags for each visitor.

At DragonCon, James and Oliver Phelps met a few of the Feltbeats-girls and so I thought it would be a good idea to present them with our sticker of Feltbeats. My daughter Catalina (She took the pictures) and I gave them to them in the interviewing area.

The panels with the twins were just great. They were funny, and in the second panel they even stood together for a picture following the request of the fans. They had stood on different ends of the stage so you could only take pictures of them separately.

They learned a little German, even though Oliver tried to sneak out on that. He tried to hide behind a wall. But after James spoke a sentence in German; “Wir lieben unsere deutschen Fans” (We love our German fans) his brother was asked for. A fan tried to trick him in to a tongue twister but there he refused.

Also attending the Ring*Con were actors Natalia Tena, Louis Cordice, George Harris and Nick Shirm from the Harry Potter movies. They had panels too, but I only saw the Natalia Tena one and the Harry Potter panel with all four actors together in which Natalia and George gave a vocal performance.

Unfortunately, no Harry Potter stars at the press conference but a lot of actors from LotR, LotS, Blood Ties and Twilight. James and Oliver Phelps attended the opening ceremony and stayed till the end, as did George, Louis and Nick.

There was also a charity auction with a lot of stuff from the fantasy corner.

As you can see there was a hand drawn picture of Draco Malfoy, by the artist Mim Kleine. Over 3000 € was raised which was given partly to a 13 year old who is living with his family in Chiping. A part went to “Bärenherz”. An organization that supports children with terminal illnesses. Another part went to an animal organization in Dachau.

By the way… Mark Ferguson of LotR was master of ceremony and he did a great job…

If you are interested you can view all the pictures here.

Thanks to Ring*Con for mentioning our website as support at the press conference and on the back of the press map.

Tom Felton in the latest issue of the German magazine Yeah!

Thanks to Sabkay for the scan and the translation of the interview of Tom Felton in the latest Yeah!.

Yeah! On November 18th Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is starting. What was the most beautiful on set?
Tom: “Mhh. I really can’t say something special. Everything was nice. I enjoyed it very much, to hang out with the crew. We are one huge family!”

Yeah! The second part of The Deathly Hallows is also already filmed. What do you miss the most from the Harry-Potter-Time
Tom: (laughs) The shooting breaks. Rupert always gave me then lessons in Golf, we had so much fun. Well, and I miss somehow my role as Draco. He is really grown to my heart after the ten years. But all good things come to an end at some point!”

Yeah! You were allowed to shoot the Movie “The Apparition” together with Ashley Greene. How is she like?
Tom: Oh, she’s an insanely great actress and looks so fine on the screen – which I thought while I watched Twilight. It was really a honor for me to work with her. She’s so cute…”

Yeah! What did you think actually about “Twilight”?
Tom: “I’ve seen the films and i like them. My Girlfriend is a huge Fan of Twilight. She almost inhales all Books. When we were on holiday in Sicily, she hardly spoke to me.. because she just read. She knows all about Team Edward and Team Jacob. I have to admit honestly: I have no plan of it.”

Yeah! Your Girlfriend Jade has also worked on the Potter-Set – as a Stunt-Coordination-Assistant. Do you still get the chance to see each other after all is over now?
Tom: “Currently, yes. She’s with me at my Appointments, and we try to be together as often as possible. But next year we have different film projects – then it will be a little harder, but we’ll find a solution then.”

Yeah! I’ve heard that you also sing. Is that true?
Tom: “Yes, Music is besides acting my passion. I founded a own record label and gave myself a contract.”

Yeah! Hey, Tom! But that’s cheating!
Tom: (laughs) “Yeah, but it is much easier. It is not so much to me, I want to look for young talents and encourage them…”

Yeah! So you don’t make more music?
Tom: “Sure I do! I’ve recorded a few songs. Singing is so much fun for me!”

Yeah! How are your Songs?
Tom: “Rocking – not too hard not too soft. They are Guitar-Songs, just like the Songs of my idol John Mayer. The Fans can be excited in any case…”
